The Tip Line

If you have a document, a calendar, a payment record, or a name we should be on — pick the channel that costs you the least to use. Every channel below routes to the editor's eyes only.

★ Recommended for documents
Encrypted email drop
For documents and large files. Use a Tor-routed email client (Tutanota, ProtonMail) and send the same way you'd send any sensitive thing — via a fresh account, not your main. We open mail in a separate compartment, scrub metadata on receipt, and never log your IP.
Address:  info@btp.com
Subject we expect:  "Tip — encrypted documents"
Response time:  we read every drop within 24 hours.

Real-time, low friction
Direct line
For short tips, conversations, or scheduling a meet. Email reaches the editor on a separate device. Disappearing-message style: we keep nothing without your written consent.
Address:  info@btp.com
Use a fresh address if you can; we don't need to know who you are to listen.

Paper trail
PGP / signed email
Encrypt to our public key. We answer from the same address, signed. If you don't have PGP set up, send unsigned to the same address — we'll start the keyswap on first reply.
Address:  info@btp.com
Public key:  on request — included in our first reply

Out of the digital chain
Postal
For documents you want out of any digital chain of custody. Send by P.O. Box; reach out by email first so we know to check. We open mail in a separate room with a separate scanner. No metadata returns to the newsroom.
Coordinate first:  info@btp.com
We'll send a P.O. Box address by reply, never publicly listed.

In person
A coffee, on us
If you want to meet, we'll meet. No phones in the room. We pay cash. No notes leave with us; only what you've agreed to. Reach out first so we can pick a place that costs you the least.
Coordinate first:  info@btp.com
Two of us, never one.

Last resort
A web form
It's the worst of these options — and we don't run one. Use email instead. The editor's address above reaches the same inbox a form would, with one less server in between.
Same destination:  info@btp.com
No JavaScript. No fields. No handler. Just send what you've got.

Our promise to sources

  1. Confidentiality. We never publish your name, your role, or any identifying detail without your prior written consent.
  2. Two of three. Your tip alone is not enough to publish. We will work to corroborate independently — that is the standard, not a courtesy.
  3. No surprises. Before publication, we will tell you what we are running, when, and how you are described.
  4. No paraphrasing. If we quote you, we use your words. If you cannot give a quote, we say so.
  5. Records. We keep encrypted notes accessible to one editor only. We do not share them with platforms, advertisers, or anyone else.
  6. If subpoenaed. If a process is served, we tell you immediately and we fight it.
