The Takeover That Isn't

More than 75 million Americans voted for the Democratic nominee in 2024. The official number is 75,017,613. (Federal Election Commission, official 2024 results)

Divide. The largest socialist organization in the country amounts to about one-tenth of one percent of the Democratic electorate. One member for every 750 Democratic voters. And this fall, it is going to be the most advertised takeover in American history.

Start with where the election actually stands. Democrats lead the generic congressional ballot by about 6 points in the Silver Bulletin average, while several large current polls put the edge closer to 3. Either number, sustained to November, threatens the Republican House majority. (Silver Bulletin, July 2026)

That is the problem the word is being hired to solve. You are watching a party that trails on the question of which side you want running Congress try to change the question to whether you are scared of socialists. After a democratic socialist unseated Rep. Diana DeGette in a Denver primary and Mamdani-endorsed candidates swept New York primaries, the response came on schedule. Trump said the left wants to "completely destroy the traditional American way of life." Speaker Mike Johnson denounced "self-identifying Marxists." (AP, July 2, 2026)

Some Democrats are helping. Rep. Josh Gottheimer, same AP story: "We've got to fight like hell to keep our party from being hijacked by socialists." A hijacking, by one-tenth of one percent.

The entire membership of the organization at the center of the "takeover" would fit inside the Harris vote total 750 times. If every DSA member lived in one House district, they still would not fill it. The growth is real. The scale is the lie. Both things are true. Only one is being advertised.

When the label met a live race, voters still chose a democratic socialist. Melat Kiros defeated a nearly 30-year House incumbent in Denver. The result does not prove a national takeover. It proves that the label alone did not settle even one heavily Democratic primary. (Associated Press, June 30, 2026)

Here is who pays for a fear campaign in an election year: the voter whose actual problem never makes it to the debate stage. The races getting the "socialist" treatment are in districts where people are choosing between the light bill and the pharmacy. When the airwaves fill up with a word, the candidates spend the fall answering for a label instead of arguing about insulin, childcare, wages, and rent.

And there is a quieter cost. When voters are trained to hear any affordability plan as a red flag, the politicians who never planned to help you get a free pass. They do not have to beat your argument. They just have to name it.

And there is a history to which movements get the label first. "Socialist" and "radical" have been aimed at Black political leaders for a century. They red-baited the civil-rights movement. They built an FBI file on Martin Luther King and called him a communist for demanding jobs and housing. The word was never really about economics. It was about who is allowed to ask for power. I notice how fast it still attaches to Black candidates and Black demands, and how conveniently it lands on the districts where the cost of living is already breaking people. When they tell you to fear the word, ask who has always been on the other end of it.

What power is really testing in 2026 is whether a label can outrun a ledger. The NRCC's own plan surveyed 46 battleground districts while Democrats held roughly a 3-to-6-point national edge. The bet is that “socialist” moves more voters than “here is what we did about your cost of living,” because on the second question there is not much to run on. Watch what wins between now and November. Not the argument. The question. Whoever picks the question usually picks the winner.

One hundred thousand people. Seventy-five million Harris voters. Roughly one-tenth of one percent. The math is not close, and the people selling the fear know it. The “socialist takeover” is not a description of the Democratic Party. It is a description of what the 2026 campaign would rather talk about than your rent.
