They Say Inflation Is 3%. Your Groceries Cost 25% More Than in 2020.

The annual number is real. So is the fact that four years of price increases never came back down. Both things are true, and only one of them shows up in the headline.

WASHINGTON — The official CPI says inflation is running 3.4%. Groceries are up 2.7% over the same year. Both numbers are accurate, and neither one explains why the register keeps surprising you. Here is the number that does: food at home costs 25% more than it did in 2020. The rate came down. The prices never did.

The Bureau of Labor Statistics uses "substitution" in its CPI methodology: when the price of an item rises, BLS assumes you switch to a cheaper alternative. Steak becomes chicken. Brand name becomes generic. A one-bedroom becomes a studio. The government does not measure your cost of living. It measures what your life would cost if you were willing to accept less of it.

Real wages are falling again in 2026, per Marketplace. Paychecks look bigger. They buy less. And shelter costs — one-third of CPI — use a statistical construct called "owners' equivalent rent" that lags actual housing prices by 12-18 months.

The Receipts

1. 25% since 2020: The BLS food-at-home index — the series that tracks what groceries actually cost — has risen roughly 25% since 2020, and about 37% since 2015. A household spending $500 a month on groceries in 2020 spends about $626 for the same basket now. Source: Bureau of Labor Statistics, Food at Home CPI.

2. Real wages falling: Marketplace reported in August 2026 that U.S. consumers' real earnings have been declining — nominal wages up, purchasing power down. Source: Marketplace, August 2026.

3. 12-18 month lag: CPI's shelter component uses "owners' equivalent rent," which systematically understates real-time housing costs by over a year. Source: PERC/Texas A&M, June 2026.

The Dispatch

Inflation is not a number. It is an experience. And the people who set the number do not share the experience.

Pew Research found in May 2026 that the answer to "have wages kept up with inflation?" depends entirely on which workers and which measure you use. Translation: for the people at the top, wages kept up. For everyone else, the answer is no.

The 2026 Social Security COLA was 2.8%. Headline CPI over the same period ran 3.4%. That gap is a real-terms pay cut for 72 million Americans — small enough to ignore on cable news, large enough to mean one less prescription filled per month. And it compounds on top of four years of increases that never reversed.

Bloomberg titled their 2026 feature "Why Americans Feel Squeezed by the Cost of Living." Feel. As if it were a mood and not a math problem.

Burn Notice

The CPI is not a thermometer. It is a thermostat. It does not measure the temperature. It sets it.

When the government says inflation is under control, it means: we have decided what you should be willing to live without. When the COLA comes in under actual costs, it means: we have decided how much less your retirement should be worth this year.

Inflation is not a mystery. It is a measurement that was designed to make the mystery disappear.

They do not measure what your life costs. They measure what your life would cost if you stopped expecting to live it.
May the bridges we burn light our path forward.
